Major Work Needed To Replace Leaky Legislative Plaza Roof

Nearly 80 trees will soon disappear from the landscape in Downtown Nashville. They have to go so workers can repair the leaky roof at Legislative Plaza.

It’s a mess at War Memorial Plaza.  There’s not much left of the lining that was supposed to keep water from leaking into the offices of Legislative Plaza down below.   And, employees are dealing with respiratory problems - problems they blame on mold caused by all the water damage.

The lining was installed 30 years ago and it needs to be replaced.

Workers are busy lifting up the granite slabs that cover the plaza.  Once they are all up, they'll install a new, state of the art lining.

In fact, the lining under every part of the Memorial will be replaced - under the fountains, and the trees.

That means nearly eighty Magnolias, Willow Oaks and Pear trees that have been there for nearly three decades will have to go.

It's a move the state says is necessary to make the repairs, but one that has people who work in this area a little upset.

“It's disappointing.  I mean it's an aesthetic attraction to this place.  But, I don't know what alternatives they have, not being an engineer or construction expert.  I don't know if there are any alternatives to cutting them down,” said Vann Colebank, a downtown worker.

Getting rid of all these trees and fixing the plaza and offices below will cost more than $16 million, but it's a solution that should stop all the leaks into Legislative Plaza.

The state architect isn't sure just how these trees will be removed.  There are efforts underway to try and save them, but that will cost a lot of money and probably isn't a reality.

Construction will go on for at least another year, but any of the work that would disrupt the legislative process will be done by January 1st.
